Student Data Rights

Districts review and provide copies of a student's record; StorylineIQ prepares it.

Who acts on a request

The educational agency decides how to respond to a request to inspect, review, or receive a copy of a student's records, and StorylineIQ supports that decision as the service provider. StorylineIQ does not determine parent or student legal rights and does not respond directly to families.

Review inside the application

District administrators use AdminIQ → Privacy & Security Hub → Student Data Rights to search for a student and review the information StorylineIQ holds about them. The review is organized into 28 documented categories described in plain language, and every category is shown — including categories that hold no records — so the district can see the complete picture rather than only what happens to exist.

Each category states where its information came from: documentation entered by an educator, information provided by the district's student information system, or a summary the application derived from other records. Where a category is maintained by the district's source system, the review says so, because corrections belong in that system rather than in StorylineIQ.

Providing a copy

Two formats are available, both produced from the same assembled record:

  • Data file: a structured file suitable for archiving or transfer to another system.
  • Printable record: a readable document a district can print or save as a PDF and share with a family.

Each copy carries an export reference the district can record in its own request log, along with the date, the categories included, and the number of records. The current export structure is version student-data-rights/2026.08.1.

Access limits and audit trail

  • Review and export are limited to district administrators.
  • A request can only reach students within the administrator's own district.
  • Practice records created in Training Classes are excluded, so demonstration data never appears in a records response.
  • Every review, export, and download is written to the district's audit trail with who acted, when, and which categories were involved. Audit entries record the activity, not the contents of the record.

Corrections and amendments

Requests to correct information are handled through AdminIQ → Parent Amendments. Where information originates in the district's student information system, the district corrects it there and the change flows into StorylineIQ on the next sync.

Deletion

Retention windows and deletion are described on the Data Retention & Deletion page. Targeted per-student deletion and full district offboarding are handled as district-directed procedures.
